Someone will describe a situation — a father, a sister, a cousin, an uncle — and your job is to figure out exactly what the relationship is between two people. Some are straightforward. Easy Ones First

1. Leah’s mother has four daughters. The first is named Spring. The second is named Summer. The third is named Fall. What is the name of the fourth daughter?

Answer: Leah — she is the mother’s fourth daughter.

2. Tom’s father has three sons. One is named Jake. Another is named Mike. What is the third son’s name?

Answer: Tom.

3. A boy named Tyler points to a man in a photograph and says, “That man’s mother is my mother’s mother-in-law.” Who is the man in the photo?

Answer: Tyler’s father.

4. Emily says, “That woman’s daughter is the only sister of my son.” Who is that woman to Emily?

Answer: Emily’s mother — the woman is Emily’s mom, and Emily’s sister is the only sister of Emily’s son.

5. Kevin is looking at a photo of a girl. He says, “She is the daughter of my grandfather’s only son.” Who is the girl to Kevin?

Answer: Kevin’s sister (or Kevin himself if the girl were male — but since she’s a girl, she is his sister).

6. Lisa introduces Mark by saying, “His mother is the only daughter of my mother.” Who is Mark to Lisa?

28. Madison introduces an older woman and says, “This woman is the mother of my father’s brother’s wife.” What relation is the woman to Madison?

Answer: She is the mother of Madison’s aunt by marriage — there is no blood relation. She would be Madison’s uncle’s mother-in-law, which has no standard family title.

32. Victor’s father’s sister’s husband’s son is named Alex. What is Alex to Victor?

Answer: Alex is Victor’s cousin — Victor’s father’s sister is his aunt, her husband is his uncle, and their son Alex is Victor’s first cousin.

33. A man named Richard says, “My wife’s mother’s only brother has a son named James. James married a woman named Angela.” What is Angela to Richard?

Answer: Angela is Richard’s wife’s cousin’s wife — there is no blood connection to Richard. She is his wife’s first cousin by marriage.

Answer: They are co-grandmothers — or in common American usage, they are both Grace’s grandmothers. The technical term for this relationship is “co-grandparents” or informally, “in-laws once removed.”

40. A man named Franklin says, “I am the grandson of the man whose son is the father of my cousin.” Franklin has no siblings. What is Franklin’s cousin’s father to Franklin?

Answer: Franklin’s cousin’s father is Franklin’s uncle — his grandfather’s son who is not Franklin’s father. And Franklin’s cousin is that uncle’s child.

The Toughest Nine

41. Edward’s father’s mother’s husband’s son’s daughter is named Claire. Edward’s grandfather had two sons. Who is Claire to Edward?

Answer: Claire is Edward’s cousin — his father’s mother’s husband is his grandfather, the grandfather’s son who is not Edward’s father is Edward’s uncle, and Claire is that uncle’s daughter.

42. A man says, “That woman’s daughter’s husband is my son.” What is the woman to the man’s son’s wife?

Answer: The woman is the man’s son’s wife’s grandmother — that woman → her daughter → who married the man’s son. So the woman is the mother of the man’s daughter-in-law, making her his daughter-in-law’s mother, and his son’s mother-in-law.

43. Rebecca’s mother is the daughter of Shirley. Shirley’s husband is Frank. Frank’s son (not Rebecca’s mother) is named Gary. Gary’s daughter is named Haley. What is Haley to Rebecca?

Answer: Haley is Rebecca’s first cousin — Gary is Rebecca’s mother’s brother (both are Shirley and Frank’s children), making Gary Rebecca’s uncle and Haley Rebecca’s first cousin.

44. A woman named Joyce says, “My son’s wife’s brother married my daughter.” What did that make Joyce’s son and daughter?
